Annual Comp Feb 2012

Step 2 Starz held their first ever internal Dance competition at Holcombe Village hall on February 18th 2012 and what a huge success it was. The competition was held in 2 different events with the afternoon comp being 5-11 year olds and the evening comp being 11+.

We were very lucky to have SAMANTHA BROWN join us as our guest judge. Samantha trained at Laine Theatre arts in London where she undertook 3 years of intense training. She has previously worked as a Principal Dancer on 3 cruise ships and has been involved in various different Pantomimes across the Country. Last year Sammy was thrilled to become part of the Pineapple Dance group and took part in the Louie Spence TV show “Pineapple Dance Studios” – This led on to Sammy performing at a Pineapple event which was held at the 02 Arena. Sammy is currently auditioning for various West End and European tour shows.

TC, who also judged the competition is one of our choreographers at Step 2 Starz, he has worked with the children each week to create their unique routines. TC has had a passion for Dance for many years and enjoys seeing each child progress during their classes.

During weekly sessions the children had learnt a specific routine in which they performed in front of the 2 judges. The children performed their routines in small groups on the stage and were judged by both TC and Sammy on different mark sheets. At the end of the competition they compared notes and an awards ceremony took place in which 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for each category were presented presented.

We had trophies, shields, medals certificates and crystal plaques which were given out to all competitors. We also held a raffle at the end of each competition where some fantastic prizes were won.

We were overwhelmed by the amount of support shown in parent’s friends and families and had over 130 people come to watch the afternoon competition. It was a fantastic day enjoyed by all and all dancers performed to a very high standard making the decision for the judges exceedingly difficult.

We also introduced a “choreography” category to the Competition in which children could create their own routines either as a solo, duet or in a group. Several of the children took part in this and some absolutely fantastic choreography was shown.

The categories for the Competition were as follows:

  • 5-8 years Street Dance
8-11 years Street Dance
11+ Street Dance
  • 5-11 years Musical Theatre
11+ Musical Theatre
  • 5-11 years Choreography
11+ Choreography
